Thekla is the best small venue I’ve been to. An old cargo boat moored in the middle of Bristol’s Floating Harbour with the main space in the old cargo hold. Because the walls are metal with ribs you might think you had been transported to an aging space ship in some far flung galaxy!
Toy performed brilliantly. Their music has fast guitar rhythms changing in subtle progressions. The drums played by Charlie were simple but brilliantly effective and the electronics from Alejandra were superb.
They played many of the tracks from their current album Join The Dots starting their set with Conductor and finishing with the Join The Dots title track. The instruments were louder and as a result the vocals were not as prominent as on the album, this actually produced a better sound.
Toy is made up of
Tom - Lead singer and guitarist
Charlie Salvidge – Drums
Alejandra Diez – Synths
Dominic O’Dair – Guitar
Maxim Barron - Bass
Banksy, who used to live in Bristol has made his mark on Thekla with The Grim Reaper painted just above the waterline.
