Is heavy sonic psych rock the new sound of California, have the days of love & peace all run dry?

There is still plenty of peace and love in California, I'm stoned right now. Perhaps there is simply more urgency inherent in many current bands, not just limited to California....

Is that how you would describe your sound to people that had not heard your music yet?

If someone asks me, I usually just say psychedelic rock....

There are a lot of bands making a lot of noise out there, Wooden Shjips, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Black Mountain what makes White Manna different?

We're named after a hamburger diner in New Jersey....

How did the band come together and when?

The band started about 4 years ago when I moved back to Humboldt County, Ca from Southern California...

Any particular instruments, effects or, recording techniques that you used on the album that would like to share with your fellow musicians’?

We recorded live in a warehouse for 3 days.  We overdubbed the vocals, saxophone, and a couple of synth tracks....

Were there any albums in your parent’s music collection that really inspired you as you were growing up and has your home state or town had any influence on your sound?

I listened to a lot of Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly when I was very young; I think Chuck Berry stuck with me more than the latter.  I grew up in New Jersey, and Monster Magnet, as well as Lord Sterling definitely had a large effect on me.  And as well, both of those bands turned me on to many bands that are still some of my favorites.....

There seems to be a degree of mystery around the band, hazy photos, no website (that we could find), is that a conscious decision or are you all just really shy?

I'm not quite sure.  I think we're all vain enough as it is....

Where was your first gig and last and what was the key memory from both shows.

White Manna's first gig was here in Arcata, Ca.  We opened up for Radio Moscow at a bar, and I guess the memory from that would be that Radio Moscow ended up moving in with me in Arcata about a year later.  Very great people.

Our last show was in Bellingham, Wa.  We played with Carlton Melton, Glitter Wizard, and The Cheeps.  Many of us partook of mushrooms that night, and it felt like the whole club was tripping. We've played a few shows with Carlton Melton and Glitter Wizard over past couple of weeks, and they are our favourite California bands...

Can we expect to see you in the U.K or Europe anytime soon and do you hope to play SXSW next year?

We will be coming to the UK and Europe later this fall.  SXSW, I'm not sure yet....
