1.   Emily Barker - A Dark Murmuration of Words

I discovered the Strawberry fair in Cambridge around 2003. An annual free festival of the arts held on midsummer common on the first weekend of June each year. During those early years I discovered a band playing at the festival called The Low Country who were fronted by Emily Barker.

Emily has since released some wonderful music with The Red Clay Halo and as a solo artist. A truly beautiful voice and sparkling personality showcased in many a memorable concert over the years that along with her recorded output, has earned her a loyal fan base.

What has made this record stand out for me, in a year when there has been an avalanche of new music released? Well during this tumultuous year, this album has been a refuge; with it’s joyous, calming and emotional tales of life and the challenges of today.

The album came out during the first half of the year and could have easily slipped by many people. Emily is however very aware of her followers old and new and has been regularly streaming shows, giving guitar tutorials, even coffee recommendations during the year. This record is an absolute gem.
