Jeff Tweedy - Union Chapel Wed 30 June 2010

Having seen the last superb Jeff Tweedy show at the Shepherds Bush Empire a few years back, the gig at the Union Chapel was one not to miss, even being just 48hrs after returning home from the Glastonbury festival!

Apart from the (un) funny comedian to start although, it must be said that he did manage to instigate the first (& last) episode of crowd surfing at the Union Chapel!

Six acoustic guitars was all that adorned the stage which, Jeff took to around 9pm.There was an hesitant start with a restarting of Someone Else's Song but, I think he was just taken aback my the size and style of the small church and the fact that daylight was still streaming through the stained glass windows.

Remember the Mountain Bed was followed by the introduction of British singer-songwriter Bill Fay and a lovely duet on Fay’s song, Be Not So Fearful"

As the set progress' any nerves were left behind and Jeff was in chatty and humorous mood. He made one comment about touring with Wico being a sedate affair but, the current tour of Europe with his family was a bit like touring with Van Halen.

They did have a great idea to have the family taking song requests off the audience as they entered the church which meant the Jeff had a list of requests to hand. Calling out the names of the requestors and often, mock chastising them for requesting a Dylan cover or Uncle Tupelo song.

Very pleased he gave a nod to the Handsome family with 'So Much Wine' and that we got 'Shot in the Arm'.

I am sure the Shepherds Bush show was longer set but, this was a thoroughly engaging evening with a man who genuinely loves his music.
