Karen Elson is a famous model (I didn’t know that). She is married to Jack White (I didn’t know that). She has delivered one of the singer/songwriter albums of 2010 (I didn’t know that, but I do now!).
This album has many styles, psychedelic (The Ghost that Walks), Vaudeville (100 Years from Now), Classic Southern guitar (The Truth is in the Dirt), Blues (Pretty Babies). There is pure Emmylou Harris country on ‘Lunsa’ and red dirt Americana on ‘Stolen Roses’ and by this time we are only half way through the album.
Much like Scalett Johanson, these ladies have until now had hidden talents. Along with new found piers, Mindy Smith, Kathleen Edwards and Tiff Merritt this is a wonderful debut record.
‘The Birds they Circle’ and ‘A thief at my Door’ are prime examples of the storytelling strength of the album indeed, every song is a listenable story. ‘The Last laugh’ is a song of beauty that even Ryan Adams would be proud of.
‘Mouths too feed’ is the album’s power song and the pivotal moment within the cycle of songs on the recording, that crowns the LP an Americana album. The acoustic reprise of ‘The Ghost who Walks’ (an idea from Neil Young’s Tonight’s the Night or Freedom?) is a fitting conclusion to the album.
Karen’s recent UK dates were cancelled so hopefully, they will be rearranged soon. If they are, don’t miss them!
10/11 (Because I hope it not a one off)
Pete
