Micah P. Hinson and the Pioneer Saboteurs

First listen: A cinematic string laden start after which, the body of songs veer from acoustic guitar to violin to yet more strings.

A baritone voice similar to Leonard Cohen. Deep lyrics and the slow pace of the songs bring s a cloud over the listeners head indeed, only ‘My God My God’ has a rhythm remotely uplifting.

Micah P. Hinson is an artist with a hardcore following I would imagine as this is not a casual album to listen to and certainly not one to listen too in any state of depression.

A long dark cloudily day record until you ‘get it’ when, it then becomes the ‘end of an exhausting day’ record.

Second listen 24 hrs later: The first part of the album is now seemingly slightly more accessible but, with the instrumental ‘The Cross that Stole this Heart Away’ the heaviness of the album returns. Today’s Micah voice reminds me of Stuart Staples (Tindersticks) .

‘Watchers’ has an Interpol ish feel and is for me the highlight of the album being full of fire and verve.

‘She’s building Castles in her Heart; has a gritty electronic backing that appears sporadically throughout the album. The violins sound so sad; the baritone vocal adds more and more depth as the song builds to a climax

The feedback drenched ‘The Returning’ winds up the album in a Neil Young ‘Weld’ style.

So after two listens I am beginning to wonder if this is an album to endure or a masterpiece? Time will tell and more than 24 hours is most certainly required.

If you like your music to be challenging then, look no further!

6/11 … but could rise with time.
