Tom Jones - Praise and Blame

The thought occurred to me that if the new Tom Jones album was a Springsteen meets God record, we would be falling over ourselves with congratulations for the aritist. So strip away any mental images you have of Tom's music and enjoy this great raw gospel blues LP, much in the sprit of Johnny Cash’s American recordings with Rick Rubin.

Ethan Jones has unleashed a power in Tom’s voice that is perfectly suited and embellishes the songs he is covering. keeping things simple from the gentle brooding opener of ‘What Good am I’ to the hellfire of the appropriately titled ‘Burning Hell’

The styles on the album are varied, more Blues, than Gospel. Country yes, there is a Banjo (I love the banjo ) on ‘Did Trouble me’. A Kings of Leon, neigh, AC/DC fiery guitar riff on the aforementioned ‘Burning Hell’ and even Rock ‘n’ Roll swing on ‘Don’t Knock’.

Much reported is that Sir Tom turned 70 this year but, that is a benefit, much like the current book/album ‘Crooked’ from Kirstin Hersh where she pours her soul into the songs, Tom does exactly the same here.

Was this a commercial venture for pure profit’s sake I don’t believe so, although, I don’t think the VP of Island Records has anything to worry about on that point, indeed if the famous leaked memo was real, he could should be eating humble pie when this week’s album charts are released.

So let's get over picture of Tom in our minds and consider that he has BJ Cole and Booker T Jones, on board as well as Gillian Welch and David Rawlings on backing vocals on an album that could just become a touchstone of his career rather than, just a novelty.

1. What Good Am I?
2. Lord Help
3. Did Trouble Me
4. Strange Things
5. Burning hell
6. If I Give My Soul
7. Don't Knock
8. Nobody's Fault But Mine
9. Didn't It Rain
10. Ain't No Grave
11. Run On

9/11
